Telenor Norway has send in a dozen of Firefox developer phones to Kosovo and Albania, to be used by the open source communities in both countries, to generate their interest in developing applications around the new mobile OS coming from Mozilla.
Telenor Norway has donated a total of 22 geekphones, 11 dedicated to Albania and 11 to Kosovo. For Kosovo there are 7 peak phones and 4 Keon Phones, that will be used by the open source developers and Mozilla representatives that are present in Kosovo, including Altin Ukshini, Gent Thaçi and Ardian Haxha (Mozilla Kosovo Team), while the other phones will be able to be rented by companies or individuals who want to develop something for it and promote it towards their network.
The same amount goes to Albania as well, dedicated for the Mozilla Albania and Open Labs. Altin Ukshini stated for us that Mozilla Community spreads these phones throughout Europe, and this includes Kosovo and Albania two, whereas Brian King, Mozilla Europe Community Manager, has ensured that these countries benefit from this new technology as well. “The phones will help our community to get to know the Firefox OS, the Mozilla mission and about Mozilla in general” said Altin, while emphasising that hopefully telephony service providers would see a benefit on Firefox OS and maybe try to get some sort of license to bring it here as well. Altin also thanked Flamur Mavraj, an Albanian living in Norway, who has been helping during this process.
A couple of weeks ago, Mozilla released the first major post-launch update of its open source smartphone platform, which included performance improvements and other enhancements. With the HTML-based Firefox OS, Mozilla is aiming to compete with other mobile operating systems, chiefly Android which is making inroads into the lower end of the market.
